Healthy gums

food Aug 29, 2021

When my children were younger I used to make homemade gums with vitamin C powder added to it. It was a no-complaints way of getting extra vitamins into them! I had completely forgotten about these until my daughter requested that we make them and use their “popper fidget” toys as moulds.

You can use any juice you want, I prefer to use fresh juice (except I believe fresh pineapple juice doesn’t work well with gelatine).  Grass-fed gelatine will give these an extra health boost (but I have no clue where to find certified halaal grass-fed gelatine in SA - if you do please let me know). If you choose to add a good quality vitamin c powder (I like the solgar brand) it would give these gums a deliciously sweet-sour taste.

We used homemade apple juice and coloured it with small amounts of Aims Barley Greens powder, Redibeets powder and turmeric.

(adapted from Mila’s Meals “Sour Gummy Sweets” recipe - which you can find online.)

▪️1 and ⅓ cup of juice (I like to use freshly squeezed juice)

▪️6 tablespoons powdered gelatine

[If you’re adding vitamin c powder, start with a quarter teaspoon then taste. You may also want to add a bit of raw honey to offset the sourness].

▪️Whisk together then heat on the stove stirring occasionally for 4 minutes. Then, working quickly, take off the heat, add a dash of beet/barley/tumeric to colour (split it into different bowls if you’re doing multiple colours) then swiftly pour into moulds and put into the fridge to set.
